What is Pay-As-You-Go energy?

Our Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) service lets you top-up your credit meter and pay for the energy you use in advance – just like a Pay-As-You-Go mobile phone.

It’s a handy way to keep track of your energy use and means you avoid the surprise of a large bill. It’s really easy to use.

You'll be given a card or a key which you can top-up at any Post Office, PayPoint or Payzone.

We offer Pay-As-You-Go gas and electricity across England, and our prices are among the cheapest you’ll find for this service. 

Why choose PAYG energy?

If you prefer to pay for your energy as you go along, PAYG may be you. The alternative is to pay monthly, where you receive a monthly bill based on meter readings.

By choosing pay as you go energy, you’ll only pay for the energy you use, as you use it. You simply top-up your account and you’re good to go.

Some customers find using Pay-As-You-Go energy fits in better with their finances. It also means you can build up credit to use during the winter months, when you’re likely to use more energy.

Topping up PAYG energy

There are various options for you to top-up your PAYG energy:

  • Top-up in person - take your top-up card to any PayPoint outlet. You can find your nearest PayPoint retailer here. It is very important that you keep your receipt from your top-up at the PayPoint outlet. This is in case of any meter top-up problems you will need the Vend Code number on your receipt to manually top-up your meter.

  • Top-up online - to top-up online go to our smart meter payments page and follow the instructions on screen

  • Top-up over the phone - call our freephone number on 0800 953 0165 to make a payment. 

Minimum top-up

Remember, your minimum top-up per fuel is £5, so you’ll need to top-up £5 on gas and £5 on electricity to get started.

Smart meters for PAYG customers 

As a PAYG customer, you’ll be able to get a smart meter for your home. This means you’ll have a device in your home which displays data about your energy usage, enabling you to have greater control over what you spend.

The smart meter is also connected to the CitizEn Energy team, meaning you no longer have to submit meter readings to us. Find out more about smart meters here
