Data released by U-switch shows that 24% of energy customers in Southampton switched to a different gas and electricity provider in 2019.
With climate change featuring so heavily in the news and people thinking more and more about ways they can do their bit for the planet, it’s no surprise that 44% of those who switched chose a green energy provider.
Southampton City Council runs its very own green energy provider*, CitizEn Energy. They supply 100% renewable electricity* and give every penny they make back into local causes, including projects to tackle fuel poverty and address climate change.
The team have been out in the community demonstrating the benefits of switching suppliers amongst vulnerable groups in Southampton. To date, 10,771 Southampton residents have received a quote from CitizEn Energy (Jun 1, 2018 - Feb 23, 2020). They particularly want those 12,000 households in Southampton who really struggle to afford their heating bills to see the benefits of switching.
Councillor Steve Leggett, Cabinet Member for Green City and Environment at Southampton City Council, said:
“It’s really encouraging that so many people switched to green energy suppliers last year. We’re keen to encourage as many people to switch as possible, to ensure they’re not overpaying. With green tariffs competing well in the market it’s great that residents are opting for these, whether that be CitizEn Energy or not.”
“With our 100% green energy promise, CitizEn Energy supports the council’s commitment to making Southampton a cleaner, green, healthier city through its Green City Charter.”
CitizEn Energy is currently offering one of the cheapest two year deals on the market, which could save switchers up to £250** on their energy bills – and give them the peace of mind of a fixed price for a full two years. CitizEn Energy also hope that other energy suppliers will be forced to reform and cut their prices to compete in the southern region and beyond, so energy is ultimately cheaper and simpler for all.
CitizEn Energy aren’t just aiming to save Southampton residents money. Covering parts of the South, South West and the Midlands, CitizEn Energy already have customers that stretch across Hampshire, to the Midlands, Cornwall and beyond.
Southampton customer, Tim Peters, said, “We are very happy with CitizEn Energy - the service is good and it’s great that the profits go to the council. Love the fact it’s renewable energy. We’ve had the two year fixed contract for two years and have just renewed again to the current two-year tariff.”
